Welcome to my Blog – About ASD

Hello and welcome to About ASD!

This blog will be filled with everything I have learnt since my sons autism diagnosis and our life filled with pictures, puzzles and paperwork.

This is my first post and as such is an introduction to my blog.  Since my son was diagnosed with ASD – autism spectrum disorder I have learnt so much about autism, about people and relationships, about support services and about mountains of paperwork.  I have learnt so much and it is all information I was desperate for in the early days so I want to share it with you in the hope that it can be helpful.

What will my blog be about?

There is lots out there on parenting a child with autism, on the emotional journey and daily struggles and joy related to autism, there are some amazing blogs out there written by people on the autism spectrum explaining different aspects of autism.

Although I am sure I will touch on some of this I want to focus on a more practical angle and simply let you know what I have learnt. What I have done, how I have done something / where  I have got information from.

Topics I plan to cover:

Speech and language including the implementation and use of all six  PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) phases.

Different therapies or strategies including Attention Autism, Social Stories, LEGO therapy and messy play.

Support and information, where to get it, what to avoid.

Paperwork and process such as the DLA (Disability living Allowance), CAF (Common Assessment Framework) and the EHCP (Education Health and Care Plan).

Getting a diagnosis – including various meetings and ADOS.

Sleep, food, haircuts and lots’s more.

Disclaimer

Everything on this blog comes from me and my own views or understanding of things I have learnt from other people, training courses, websites etc.  I am a parent not a professional or specialist in autism.  I will do my best to be accurate but if I make a mistake get in touch and let me know.
